Privacy Policy

Effective July 12, 2026

This page explains, in plain terms, what mdformatter does and does not do with your data. If anything here is unclear, contact us.

The short version

mdformatter has no accounts and no sign-up. The Markdown text you type is converted in your browser session and is not saved as raw text anywhere. The document files it generates (DOCX/HTML/PDF) are stored temporarily on our server and automatically and permanently deleted after 24 hours. We use Google AdSense to show ads, which involves cookies — details below.

What we process when you convert a document

When you click Convert, your Markdown is sent to our server, rendered into the requested output format(s), and the result is written to temporary storage under a randomly generated job ID. The raw Markdown text itself is processed in memory and is not written to disk. If you fill in optional metadata (title, author, date, abstract), that text is embedded directly into the generated document — it is not stored anywhere as a separate record.

How long files are kept

Generated files are deleted automatically by a scheduled cleanup job approximately 24 hours after creation. There is no way to extend this, and once deleted, a file cannot be recovered.

Share links

The "Share" feature gives you a link built around your job's ID. That ID is effectively a password: anyone who has the link can view or download the document until it expires, with no login required. Don't share the link for anything sensitive with anyone you don't want to have it.

No accounts, no profiles

There is no login, no user database, and nothing that links a conversion to your identity beyond the temporary job ID described above.

Markdown that references external images

If your Markdown links to an image hosted elsewhere (![alt](https://example.com/image.png)), our server fetches that image from its source in order to embed it in your document. That request goes to the image's host, not to us — be mindful of this if your Markdown references private or tracking-enabled image URLs.

Server logs

Like virtually all web servers, ours automatically logs standard technical information for security and operational purposes — things like IP address, requested path, timestamp, and browser user agent. These logs are not used to build profiles and are not linked to the content of anything you convert.

Cookies & advertising

Google and its advertising partners use cookies (including the DoubleClick/DART cookie) to serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites, and to measure ad performance. Depending on your location, some ads may be personalized based on your interests.

mdformatter is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
